Hi Mike, I couldn't agree more. Writing is hard, and rewriting is the key. Two great books about the writing process, the first is my favorite: "On Writing" by Stephen King (the first half is a really nice memoir) and the classic "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser.
Thanks for the book recommendations. There is a whole post to be written on good writing tips. I agree that rewriting is hard work. Some professor on Twitter (I want to say César Hidalgo, but I could be wrong) gave some advice to grad students that went something like this: "you are going to have to rewrite this paper 20 times before it is ready. If you take weeks and months to do this, you will take a long time to finish." I like the motivation there-- get to the rewriting.
